My Beauty Diet: Shopping My Own Collecton

The dreaded words .... SPENDING BAN. Whenever I read them I cringe a little but so I'm making up my own rules to limit my purchases over the next few weeks. As some of you may have already saw through my Instagram, I have been on a beauty diet for a few weeks now! I've been cutting out new purchases, and limiting myself to shop my own makeup collection.

The last time I did this was about six months ago and I really enjoyed the experience. It kind of mimics starting a new diet. The first week or so you are really miserable and grumpy, but after a little while you start to see the benefits of what you're doing for yourself. That's exactly how I feel about my spending ban. I think spending ban sounds restrictive and scary so I like using the term Beauty Diet a little more. It's just all about (re)discovering old faithfuls as well as products that you've never had the chance to try but have been sitting in your beauty drawer for a while now.

Just a small portion of my collection ... probably not someone who needs a lot!

Any beauty blogger or makeup lover knows that sometimes we buy too much. Almost always, we buy things we don't need but want to try. But what's the point of continually buying products to the point that you're not actually giving yourself time to test out the products you've purchased? That's how I feel sometimes with my own spending habits. I'll buy buy buy, meanwhile if you're getting sent samples to try, have subscription boxes coming in, you're over-flooded with products and you're not actually appreciating the value in each one.

Not even all my foundations ... need to get through some of these babies!

My last purchase was from the MAC Alluring Aquatic Collection as well as ordering some lipglosses from Whitening Lightning which haven't arrived yet. I haven't made any purchases since a few days into June. I actually haven't missed it and I have felt relieved that I have lots of time now to try out some new palettes, foundations and other goodies that I've picked up! It's a good feeling.

Some unopened items I'm keen to try!

The last time I attempted to curb my Makeup purchases, I tried a "Project Pan" (originally done by Lollipop26) where you pick a certain amount of products to "use up" but it didn't go so well. I'm someone who likes to mix up the things I wear on a daily basis, so using the same products over and over again made me miserable and I wasn't enjoying applying my makeup anymore. I like to actively shop my collection and spend a morning picking out items that I haven't used in a long time to create a totally new and fresh makeup look. That's what I've been doing lately and I've really been enjoying it.

I've decided not to set any rules for this beauty diet, other then making a really true and consistent effort to shop my own collection and really think about future beauty purchases to make sure I'm buying for the right reasons and not just because a product is hyped or getting caught up in a buying spree.

So you may see me purchasing new things a little here and there (what do you do when the new makeup geek blushes JUST came out?) and I view this like allowing yourself cheat nights while you're on a diet, but the overall message is I'm definitely trying to cut down on large hauls, at least for a while.

I  have my brother and sister-in-law visiting from Canada and staying with me and my boyfriend in a week and I really want to save my dollars to ensure they enjoy every minute that they're here in Australia. I'm not sure how long I will continue with my no makeup buying, at least until the end of June but hopefully for even longer! I honestly have been enjoying the experience so far.

Quick Tip: If you are having makeup withdrawal, try going to beautybay, mecca or your favourite online makeup store. Put all the items you want in your cart, then go through each item one by one, asking yourself: Do I really want this? Do I really need this? Do I have something similar already in my collection? Slowly I tend to get rid of most items, whatever is left, put on a wishlist for later! By the time this process has ended (usually for me, hours have passed) you'll find you probably don't feel as bad anymore!

Have you ever attempted a beauty diet before? How long did you last? What were your rules?

  1. Such a cute post! I'm no longer having withdrawals either but I did get a haul of things in the mail from purchases before my ban hehe

    1. Thanks so much Zara! I just had my whitening lightening order arrive the other day and it's like Christmas. I usually get parcels delivered to my boyfriend's parents house and they seem surprised nothing has showed up for a few weeks now! They know me too well haha. I hope your beauty diet is going well :) It seems like you have good willpower!

  2. I'm on a beauty diet at the moment! I did have one slip up, I was buying a gift for my friend and was just so cheap to add another NYX matte lip cream to my cart - oops! I'm trying to use up a lot of the samples that I have, as I have so many little foil packets sitting around.

    1. I'm glad you are in this with me Lena! It can be so hard to change your habits and not pick things up here and there. I also had a slip up & picked up some of the bourjois rouge edition velvets from Priceline's pink dot dale, they were on for $10 instead of $24. Sometimes you just need it!!! I didn't buy ANYTHING else from Priceline though which for me, is pretty much a miracle. Using samples is a great idea! I am doing the same, I had a lot of skincare ones like cleansers, moisturisers, etc. Thanks for your comment! xx

    1. Aw thanks so much hun, that is so sweet of you to say. I am realising more and more lately that I do have a pretty good collection although it's nothing even close to some of the youtubers I watch but definitely more than one girl needs :) Thanks again for your comment!
