What I'm Loving Lately: Skincare Edition

One of my favourite categories of products to read about, research and buy is definitely skincare! A good skincare routine is essential if you want the rest of your makeup to look its best. If you want to feel confident with little or no makeup, you need to maintain a good skincare routine ...

Following a recent post from a Photo A Day challenge from the lovely More Than Adored on my Instagram account, I thought I'd do a full post about my current skincare routine. These are products that I've been loving lately and which have been really useful for me and my temperamental skin.

I have combination skin that has some dry patches, especially in this colder weather. However I'm prone to oiliness in my t zone and breakouts around my chin. I have been leaning towards products that are more simplistic lately, which I have found is working really well for me so far.

Alpha-H Balancing Cleanser (100 ml - $35.70)
If you have been following my blog for a while, you'd know I just love the Australian brand Alpha-H. I think this may be my third full-size bottle of this product. There are so many cleansers out there and I feel like I've tried them all. This one gets rid of all my makeup, including mascara and doesn't sting my eyes. It has a lovely creamy texture which is gentle and moisturising on the skin. It contains nourishing Vitamin E and Aloe Vera which are very beneficial for the skin and make this product suitable for all skin types including those who are sensitive. It's a very simple product, but also very effective. I just love this cleanser and I'd highly recommend it to anyone!

This is one of the first products I've tried from the brand Puretopia and I've been so impressed with it. I received this in my Priceline Skincare Goodie Bag that they had on promotion a few weeks ago. It's always hard to find a face scrub that isn't too harsh on the skin, but which also feels like it's actually doing something. This is described by Puretopia as a "creamy low foaming gel with gentle silica & limestone scrub particles". I find the particles are very tiny so they aren't abrasive to the skin but they are still gritty enough to exfoliate the top layer of the skin with ease and leave your face feeling clean and supple. This product also has a lovely citrus, fresh scent which is very natural and not overpowering. This scrub is suitable for all skin types. The texture of the scrub is a gel like consistency and it is quite thick so those with dry skin types may not like the texture on their skin compared to a creamier exfoliant, however I love it!

Bioderma Atoderm Creme (200 ml - $29.99)
I decided to switch up my regular moisturiser for this one because I've had some really dry patches on my face. This cream can also be used on any dry areas you have on your body. It is targeted for dry to very dry skin. It has a very creamy and smooth consistency that spreads really easily across the face and penetrates the skin for an instant boost of moisture. I don't find this greasy at all and I have had no problems wearing it underneath makeup. It has really helped my dry patches. This moisturiser is hypoallergenic and fragrance free. Again, very simple but effective!

I wanted to try a new face mask to help with some of the breakouts I've been having around my chin as well as to reduce oilyness in my t zone. I literally have heard no one talk about or review this product but when I saw it at Priceline, I was intrigued. I like Avène for their thermal spring water spray, so I thought I'd try out the cleanance mask. This is a face mask that is targeted for oily skin types and is used to reduce the appearance of blemishes. It is a kaolin clay based mask which also contains salicylic acid to treat blemishes. You leave the mask on your face for 5 minutes (I left mine on for longer) and then rinse it off with a damp cloth. Unlike other clay masks, I found that this one felt comfortable on the face and didn't leave my pores feeling too tight or dry. I have used this as a full face mask, and also as a spot treatment which I kept on overnight. I enjoyed both ways of using it and think it's a really nice product. It has reduced the redness in my blemishes and helped reduce oil and congestion in my t-zone. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is oily or blemish-prone.

This is another product that I've been using to help with my pesky breakouts. I featured this product in my June Favourites and I'm still using it regularly. It's a simple and effective spot treatment solution and I also don't find it overly drying on my skin. The main active ingredient in this treatment is 1.5% salicylic acid to tackle those annoying blemishes. I also love that this product contains caffeine and red algae to reduce redness and calm irritated skin. Winner!

Another product from the amazing Alpha-H. This is a serum I'm using specifically to help with scarring from previous acne breakouts and to assist in cell renewal in those areas. Vitamin A is known for it's powerful ability to improve skin firmness, texture and tone while the Evening Primrose Oil assists to moisturise the skin. I use this serum on alternative evenings to help strengthen and repair my skin especially in areas where I've previously had breakouts. It's important to introduce this serum into your routine gradually, since some people may find their skin is sensitive to the powerful serum. I initially was using this each night but my skin became very irritated and sensitive. Once I reverted back to using it every second night, my skin was fine.

I have noticed some great results with this serum over the last 6 weeks, particularly a great reduction in the redness on my face and a more even skin tone, especially a moderate reduction in the acne scarring around my chin. This product may seem a little pricey but you only need 2-3 drops to cover your entire face so a bottle can easily last you 6 months or more. This is definitely a multi-tasking serum and I'm loving the results I see and will continue to use this product!

Well, that's all my favourite skincare items over the past few months. I hope you guys enjoyed reading about them. What are your favourite skincare products this winter?
