My Beauty Resolutions for 2015

Bows & Pleats HQ

I apologise for the lack of posts over the past few weeks, but never fear, Bows & Pleats is back in action and I'm really looking forward to an amazing year with lots of fresh content and exciting new beauty finds!!! I got engaged last year, and this year I'll be getting married! I'm so happy and full of excitement, and I'll definitely have some wedding-related posts coming up for you later in the year. I'm still working full time, but I am committed to having a fresh blog post up for you once a week, with more posts and content whenever possible!!!

Please let me know in the comments below if there are any particular types of content, tutorials, reviews, or how-to's you'd like me to cover on here. I'm happy to talk about anything including fashion, health & fitness, hair, skincare, wedding planning, home decor, DIY, and of course makeup!!!

Now, onto my beauty resolutions for the year. I never like to take on too much when it comes to resolutions, but as a makeup fanatic, there are definitely some things I'd like to do more of throughout the year ....

Going through what I use & what I don't!

1. PURGE

I know it sounds scary, but anyone who buys or hoards a lot of makeup will know it's a necessary evil. I have already done quite a bit of this and it feels so refreshing. Clean out your nail polishes, any that have a lot of discolouration or are quite old you can sell or donate or throw away. Go through your least used makeup items, check to make sure nothing has expired, if you aren't sure you should probably get rid of them. Anything that you find you don't use but is still good, give away to a friend or a family member. If it's something you want to keep, put it somewhere you know will remind you to use it and try it out.

2. ROTATE

Yes, yes, sometimes you really LOVE a product and you want it to be on your vanity or close to you at all times, but if you are always using the same products, you won't get full use of your makeup collection. Try to rotate the items you use each week. Change up your eyeshadow palette, try out a new foundation or primer, and with lipsticks, I generally use a new one each day! I probably have enough so I could wear a new colour each day for a year! This is the only way you will make use of your purchases, and for me, when I'm using everything, I feel less guilty for my large collection. Win-Win!

I always rotate my foundations (L-R): Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum, Napoleon Perdis Stroke of Genius, L'Oréal Lumi Magique, Nars Sheer Glow & (Top): YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat

3. EMBRACE EMPTIES

If you already own 10 foundations, chances are you probably don't need to purchase another one. Try to set limits for yourself, so you can't purchase a new one until you are down to just 5 foundations. If it's something that is more difficult to finish up like blushes or highlighters, do more regular clean-outs, and any that you find yourself ignoring, give to another beauty friend in need! You will thank yourself and your makeup storage will look way less cluttered! Empties can be fun especially if you are a blogger because then you can write about them!

My beloved Bourjois Happy Light Luminous Serum Primer is almost empty!!!

4. BE NICE TO YOUR SKIN

Last year my skin went through a horrible stage of severe acne breakouts. Thankfully, after establishing a skincare routine that worked for me and sticking with it for a few months, my skin is pretty much the best it has ever been. It's easy to forget about your skin until you start experiencing issues like dryness, breakouts or excess oil. I always try to remember how unhappy I was when I went through the bad period with my skin, so I motivate myself to stick with my skincare routine and avoid getting lazy! I have my nighttime skincare products (aside from my cleanser) next to me on my bedside table so even if I initially forget, I will see the products before I go to sleep and it prompts me to slap them all on from the comfort of my own bed!

Anyone with a skincare stash this big needs to keep up a good routine!

5. BE CREATIVE

Just like anyone, sometimes I find that once I have found a good everyday look, I can stick with it for days, I always change up my routine slightly, but sometimes I subconsciously forget to go outside my comfort level. This year I definitely want to experiment more with colour and bolder looks. I work in an office, but you can still incorporate colour into your makeup and be work appropriate. It's important to keep creativity flowing so you can discover new ways of doing your makeup and different uses for the same products!

Urban Decay Vice Palette & Chi Chi Cosmetics Rich Gems Palette are colourful & beautiful!

Well, that's all from me, and I think these are all achievable goals to work on throughout the year!
What are your beauty (or other) resolutions for 2015?

  3. These are all really helpful tips! I wouldn't say I'm on a spending ban but I'm trying to think a lot more before I buy and having the space and just the occasions to use all my makeup is a big factor! xx

  4. I am on a total spending ban at the moment. I'm planning on moving this year to Melbourne and I will only be taking a small amount of things, so I need to use a lot up, and even sell some things/give them away. I need to rotate some of my makeup storage since I keep wearing things that are just in front of me which isn't very creative.

  5. Thanks girl! I'm glad you found them helpful. I'm also really trying to cut back my spending, and just make the most of my high-end purchases instead of them going to waste! It actually makes me feel a lot better when I know I am using most of my collection. Thanks for your comment! xx

  10. Perfect resolutions! I really should purge and try to use things up as well...It's so haaaard! I had a bit of a cleanout at the end of last year but it didn't make a massive dent I don't think :( And yes - a solid skincare routine really helps!

  11. That is definitely a good one to have. I think especially when you own a lot of high end products, like MAC and NARS you want to make sure you are getting your money's worth and using them a lot! Otherwise you get product overload and it becomes messy and overwhelming and you don't end up using half of it! Thanks for your comment beauty x

  12. Thanks Melissa! Good luck with it! I have really been enjoying switching up my regular products for ones I haven't used in a while. I recently rediscovered my Australis Fresh & Flawless Powder and my Naked 1 Palette! Old faithfuls I had forgotten about! x

  13. I really want to minimise my beauty routine. I suppose purge! I just want a streamlined go to look!

  14. I hate the purge! Lol I just can't bring myself to throw things away. I definitely need to be more diligent about rotating out my products though, I always get too comfortable using the same products. Especially foundations!

  15. Great resolutions! Definitely need to clear my stash of the old gross stuff! And I have wayyy too many foundations. I would rotate them but they don't match/break me out. Oops. Haha! 'Be Kind to your skin' yes! Definitely one of my resolutions too :)

Very true, I couldn't agree more with the points in this piece! They are all things I try to practice as often as I can. I tend to go through product saturation from time to time, where I don't buy much because there's simply no room! It's fun to go through and shop your stash because you often find things that you had forgotten you loved. :)

I am currently in the process of a purge. Ive been going through my face products and throwing away old or incorrectly colour matched foundations. The number of face products I had stored away was rediculous. More than any sane person needs lol
