What's In My Travel Makeup Bag?

I'm back from my holidays!!! I went away for 2 weeks to Hawaii to visit with my Mom and Dad who flew down from Canada to meet with my fiance and I. We had a blast!!! I thought it would be a good idea to write this post so you can see what I decided to take with me on my trip. I always struggle to figure out what makeup items to bring with me when I go away because I never want to overpack (because we all know that I will be buying new makeup while I'm away), but then again you don't want to forget anything important!!!

Keep reading if you want to see what I brought with me in my travel makeup bag!

Primers & Finishing Spray

You always need to have a good primer, or else you won't get the long-lasting finish you want. Without a good primer, your foundation won't apply as smoothly and will just melt off your face. I decided to bring along my Stila One Step Correct as a moisturiser as well as a primer, and my Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer for a more long-lasting primer. Finally, I packed a travel size of my Skindinavia Makeup Finishing Spray which is amazing for preventing makeup from melting off your face from the heat.

Base Products

The most important products to me are base products because if you forget the essentials, your eyeshadow, mascara or lipstick will be pretty useless because your skin won't be looking it's best! I always bring along a facial SPF if I know I'm going to be in the sun, this time I packed the Model Co Daily Face Mattifying Sunscreen SPF50+. For my foundations, I wanted one that was lightweight and moisturising so I decided on the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation. Then for a more full-coverage foundation for any special nights out, I chose the long-wearing L'Oreal Infallible 24H Stay Fresh Foundation. I usually place my foundations into smaller sample jars so I don't have to take the entire bottles with me when I travel.

Keeping with base products, I packed a concealer to highlight under my eyes and under my brow bone which is the amazing Maybelline Dream Lumi Concealer in the shade Ivory for highlighting. Then for covering up any blemishes or redness I use the full coverage NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in the shade Custard. Finally, for setting my makeup I packed the Bourjois Healthy Balance Compact Powder in Light Beige which provides a little extra coverage but doesn't go on cakey at all and gives a flawless finish.

Cheek Products

Some of my favourite products are definitely cheek products and blushes! For this trip, I decided to take my multi-tasking expert, the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette which I use to set, highlight and contour my face. I also wanted to bring along my favourite MAC blush in Warm Soul which goes with everything and looks so natural and my Prestige Mineral Blush in Pink which gives off the most gorgeous pop of pink on the cheeks.

Eyebrow Products

Next up, don't forget to bring some products to groom your brows! Depending on how bold you usually like your brows, you may want to bring along the Benefit Gimme Brow which adds some colour and texture to the brows. I also love the Anastasia Beverly Hills Bold & Beautiful Kit that contains a mini brow kit, with a brow powder and a gel. It also has mini tweezers, and a dual ended brush with an angled brow brush and a spoolie brush. It has everything you need for your brows and is perfect for travel. Finally, for super sleek and bold brows, I always pack my Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in Dark Brown which is pretty much waterproof and sweatproof, so ideal for hot climates.

Eye Products

I always find eye products the most difficult to pack for because with so many palettes it's so hard to decided which one to take along! I ended up packing a little too many, and took some smaller palettes with me. I brought along my two favourite pieces from the Too Faced La Belle Carousel set. One piece is an eyeshadow quad containing mainly shimmery shades. The second piece contains a blush and a bronzer that also double up as great shadows. Secondly, I packed my custom z palette with a mixture of Makeup Geek eyeshadows and shadows from my Ofra Cosmetics Pro 'Diamonds are Forever Palette'. Although I probably didn't need any more shadows, I also threw in the Urban Decay Naked Basics 2 Palette which has mainly matte shades that are great for multipurpose use.

Finally for the eyes, I also packed my favourite cream highlight that can be used as an eyeshadow base, inner corner highlight, under the brow bone and for pretty much anything which is the Enhancer by Napoleon Perdis. For mascara, I decided to pack Benefit They're Real! along with my Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Eyeliner and my mini Too Faced Shadow Insurance Eyelid Primer.

Lip Products

Finally ... the hardest to decide for me is LIPSTICK!!! I wish I could bring them all with me but that just isn't realistic, so I try to pick around three shades which are very different, so no matter what mood I'm in, I can have what I need.

For this particular trip, I decided on a nude in my trusty MAC Cosmetics Faux, a beautiful orange/coral in Melt Cosmetics Summer and a medium pink in Australis Colour Inject Mineral Lipstick in Salsa.

Well, that seems like A LOT of makeup for just two weeks but I pretty much used it all! The only thing I would say I packed too much of was the eyeshadow since I found I mainly used my z palette.

I hope you enjoyed this post. What is your makeup must have for when you're travelling?

  1. Ooh MAC Faux is such a unique shade! And I'm eyeing the Naked Basics 2, but just waiting for the price to drop! Putting foundations in small pots is such a good idea!

  2. Great post Sarah, you have given me a lot to think about with my upcoming trip to Japan!!

  3. That's so prepared! On my trip to Australia over Christmas I took a lot of makeup and barely wore any of it since I spent almost every day by or in the pool!

  4. Bourjois Healthy mix serum is the best! Great picks you have there. I rarely travelled but ever since I got into makeup I find it daunting having to travel, I'm addicted to too many things to pick and choose.

  5. The Nars Concealer and Bourjois powder are must-haves in my travel makeup bag too :) if you have a post on your Z Palette, I'd love to know as you have some gorgeous shades in there that are just my sort of thing xx

  6. MAC Faux is honestly a staple for me now Sheri, you should definitely check it out if you feel like forking out $36 any time soon, haha. Naked Basics 2 is really nice. I actually got mine when I did a US order from Sephora when the dollar didn't suck. It's pricey over here considering the size! Thanks for your comment beauty!

  7. Thanks Melissa! When are you going to Japan? My fiance went there a few years back and just loved it but said it is bloody hot so you better pack your best sweatproof makeup!!!

  8. I know I hate when I take too much and it weighs down my suitcase! For Australian summer all you can really wear is a BB cream because when you're at the beach all the time you will just sweat it off anyway. Thanks Lena!

  9. Healthy mix is such a nice everyday foundation! I love it! It's so hard to decide what to part with when you're going on a trip! I hope this post is helpful for your next trip! I totally feel you, I am so sad to leave my MAC lipsticks everytime I go away hehehe.

  10. I really love the Bourjois powder too! I've heard some people really dislike it but I find it adds the perfect amount of coverage and is so nice and soft and blends into the skin nicely!

I have this post on my z palette when I first started out:

But the palette in this picture I just made specifically for my trip and it's a mixture of makeup geek eyeshadows and shades from the Ofra Cosmetics Pro Diamonds are Forever palette you can see here:

  11. We are off at the end of August for 3 weeks! My boyf and I will also be celebrating both of our birthdays over there! I so excited! I visited Japan 10 years ago now with my high school! We did a home-stay and I'm meeting up with my host family too! Plus I have been researching all about Japanese Beauty Products!! Can't wait to Haul up and in the Japanese version of Priceline!! Some of the products are crazy!!

  12. Wow, that sounds amazing!! Will be so cool to see your host family after all of that time! Celebrating your birthday in another country is always so unique and unforgettable! There are so many cool beauty products in Japan! I can't wait to read all your blogs about them :) You must be so pumped to plan your trip!!! Can't wait to see all of your pictures as well! xx

  13. Loving this post! Even more tempted to buy the Hourglass palette now!
