Wake Up & Glow: 8 Highlighters That Will Make Your Skin Look Radiant

Wake Up & Glow: 8 Highlighters That Will Make Your Skin Look Radiant

What better way to brighten up your monday blues than with a post packed with pretty, sparkly pictures and swatches? It took me a while to understand why highlighters are important and can make a huge difference to your normal makeup routine. I wouldn't necessary say that they are an every day staple (although I do apply one every day) but if you are wanting your skin to look youthful, radiant and glowing, you need to familiarise yourself with some of these amazing products!

If you'd like to know about some of my favourite highlighters complete with a whole bunch of swatches, this one is for you! WARNING: picture heavy post!

Wake Up & Glow: 8 Highlighters That Will Make Your Skin Look Radiant

1. Napoleon Perdis Greatest Hits Cheek Palette - $45 AUD

Napoleon Perdis Greatest Hits Cheek Palette

This is an amazing palette from Napoleon Perdis that contains two of my favourite highlight shades. One is a more pearlescent beige highlight and the other has a lovely gold sheen that adds warmth to the face. They are gorgeous worn alone or layered together and a small amount goes a long way. I believe these are available as single shades from Napoleon, however the palette was limited edition but is still accessible here through their US website.

2. MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle - $47 AUD

Mac Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle

This is definitely a cult favourite within the beauty community, and from the amazing swatch below, I bet you can tell why. This has long been held as one of the holy grail highlighters that many people would recommend, most likely since the peachy bronze shimmer suits almost every skintone imaginable. This highlighter is pigmented but I find it blends out nicely into the skin and doesn't look over the top. It pairs really beautifully with a mid tone rose blush or a bronzer.

3. Hourglass Cosmetics Incandescent Light - Ambient Lighting Wardrobe - $76 AUD

Hourglass Cosmetics Incandescent Light

Before you start asking me why anyone would pay this much for a palette of powders, don't judge until you have tried some of these products from Hourglass yourself!!! They are extremely high quality and definitely represent cosmetic luxury! This Ambient Powder Wardrobe consists of three powder shades and is a limited edition item but still widely available. The centre shade is a highlighter called Incandescent Light that is only available within this palette. It is a gorgeous, stunning "glow from within" highlighter that adds to the natural radiance of your face to make you look super flawless with ease. It's less sparkly than the others and a more natural highlighter but it glides on like a dream and looks so pretty. This is perfect for anyone who fears looking like a disco ball but wants a more glowing, radiant look to their makeup base.

4. TheBalm Mary Lou-Manizer - $34.95 AUD

TheBalm Mary Lou-Manizer Highlighter

This is personally my holy grail and favourite highlighter of all time! If you haven't heard of TheBalm, they are a very underrated brand from the United States, but are also available here in Australia at David Jones or their website ships internationally. It has a gorgeous golden sheen (similar to the one from the Napoleon Perdis cheek palette) but I would say this one is more pigmented and metallic and you only need the smallest amount! I use this not only as a cheek highlighter along my cheekbones, but under my brow bone, along the inner corners of my eyelids and anywhere that needs some glow! This is gorgeous! Make sure you use a light hand because it is a little sparkly and it could easily go on a little heavy. I do find that this highlighter blends out easily though and if you apply too much you can add some powder over top and blend and you'll be okay.

5. Essence Cosmetics Soo Glow! Cream to Powder Highlighter - $5.75 AUD

Essence Cosmetics Soo Glow Cream to Powder Highlighter Bright Up Your Life

For anyone wondering when some more affordable highlighters would be discussed here, this is a great deal from Essence Cosmetics! When it comes to affordable products, they have you covered (a full blog post about my favourite items will be up this week).

This highlighter is a little different than the other I have described so far because it is a cream to powder highlighter. I like to apply mine with my index finger, pat it along my cheek bones or under my brow bone and gently pat it out to blend it in or you could use a beauty blender or a stippling brush if you like. They have two shades in the cream highlighter, a more creamy beige and this one which is shade 20 bright up your life and it is a more pink-pearl based tone. I would say that this highlighter would also be suited to someone that likes a more natural glowy look, and this one also does well in terms of longevity because the cream base seems to last a little longer than a powder. You could even go wild, and set this cream highlight with a powder highlight over top for an extra pop of glitz.

6. Mac Cosmetics Mineralize Skinfinish in Perfect Topping - $47 AUD

Mac Cosmetics Mineralize Skinfinish in Perfect Topping

If you weren't overly excited by Mac's Soft and Gentle, I've got another Mineralize Skinfinish for you called Perfect Topping (LE). What's not to love about this highlighter? It has a cute name, the newer MAC packaging, as well as a lovely embossed pattern. This shade is a shimmery pale peach with lavender tones throughout. I would say it's warm-toned but it also has a frosted sheen. It is similar to TheBalm Mary Lou-Manizer, but different enough that I was able to warrant this purchase!

7. BECCA Liquid Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal - $52.80 AUD

Becca Liquid Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal

This liquid highlighter is a major multi-tasker! You can wear it as a water-based moisturiser with SPF as well as a liquid highlighter that you mix in with your foundation to make it appear more luminous or over the top of your foundation as you would apply a powder highlighter. It contains light diffusing particles that add shimmer and reduce imperfections in the skin. The shade Opal is a golden pearl colour that is very flattering. The formula contains anti-oxidant vitamins so it is beneficial and hydrating for the skin.

8. Benefit Watt's Up! Cream to Powder Highlight - $53 AUD

Benefit Watts Up! Highlighter

This is another cream to powder finish and it's gorgeous! Probably the most long-wearing highlighter I own, I often turn to this baby when I am having a big night out and I want to ensure I maintain a gorgeous glow throughout sweating, dancing and whatever else the night may throw at me. This highlighter has a gorgeous champagne shimmer and is quite pigmented for a cream highlight. I would say that the only downfall of this product is the packaging, one side contains the highlighter in a wind up tube, and the other side has a sponge you can use to blend out the product but I found the sponge really didn't work for me and I prefer to blend out with my fingers or with a beauty blender. Either way, the result is gorgeous and I'd recommend this highlighter to others.

Benefit Watt's Up! Highlighter

Well, that's my highlighter roundup! Hopefully out of those 8 products, there was one that resonated with you that you might try in the future. Are there any highlighters that you love that aren't listed here? I'd love to know about them (although I clearly don't need any more in my collection)! Thanks for reading as always.
