How-To: Special Occasion Makeup (My Engagement Photoshoot)

Today I thought I'd do a bit of a different post for you about a recent makeup look that I achieved on myself for my engagement photoshoot. As some of you may know, I am getting married in October of this year ... the countdown is on! 6 months to go!!! So in line with that, the photographer we hired to capture our special day was kind enough to offer us a complimentary engagement photoshoot, where we got together for an hour in a beautiful scenic location on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and had a practice shoot. The whole idea is to get used to working together, posing, trying different angles so we can feel more comfortable for the big day.

I thought it would be worthwhile to show you all what products I used for the photoshoot and how the photos actually turned out! I hope it might be beneficial for anyone who is planning a special night or occasion coming up where you want to take nice photos and may be wondering what makeup to wear and what you should do!

The Products

I started off by priming my face with the Face of Australia High Definition Primer (featured in my March Favourites) which is a silicone-based primer, and excellent for smoothing the skin and reducing the appearance of any pores or fine lines. For my base, I used my HG foundation the Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation (full review here) which is a medium coverage foundation that I like to build up to make full-coverage. It gives a semi-matte finish while still looking luminous and natural. I concealed any of my redness or blemishes with my MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NC25 and blended that in with a beauty blender. I highlighted under my eyes with the Chi Chi Cosmetics 3-in-1 Eye Concealer and also blended that in with my Beauty Blender. I then set my undereye area with the Face of Australia Translucent Loose Powder, and set my entire face with the Youngblood Mineral Rice Setting Powder which adds some extra coverage while setting the foundation and concealer. I think having a flawless base is the most important aspect for looking good for an important event!

For eyes, I primed with my MAC Paint Pot in Soft Ochre and also used that underneath my brow bone and inner corner to achieve an even skintone. I went for a very natural, brown smokey eye using the Morphe Cosmetics Jaclyn Hill Favourites Palette (Recently featured in my April Favourites). I made sure to define the crease but keep the lids light and natural, adding some highlight to the inner corners and underneath the brow bone. I then added a slight wing with my Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Liner and skipped falsies for a few coats of the Benefit Roller Lash Mascara* which is dark and dramatic and perfect for the look I was setting out to achieve.

Eyebrows are really important to frame the face, so I used my trusty E.L.F Studio Eyebrow Kit in Medium to define the desired shape of my brow with a small angled brush. I then went back in with a matte brown eyeshadow from my Lorac Cosmetics Pro Palette (Sable/Espresso) to fill in the rest of the brow so it appears thicker and more defined. I finished off the brow with my clear brow gel from Daiso.

To finish things off, I lightly dusted my whole face with the first shade of the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette, Dim Light for a more soft-focussed look. I highlighted above my cheek bones and down the centre of my face with the middle shade, Incandescent Light and used the last shade, Radiant Light to warm up my face and as a blush on the apples of my cheeks. I wanted to keep the look very natural and I think the Hourglass palette was a perfect way to look flawless but still natural. I finished off the look with MAC Pink Plaid lipstick.

Make sure you don't forget finishing spray so your makeup stays on all day or night, and lasts throughout any sweat, tears or weather you may experience. I used my Skindinavia Makeup Finishing Spray in Bridal which stays on through anything and everything!

I was really happy with how this look came out and my biggest pieces of advice are:

Do your makeup how you would normally do it every day, in a way that reflects your personality but just add a little bit of extra drama so that all the colours pick up nicely in the photographs.

Make sure to allow yourself enough time to do your makeup comfortably without being rushed because you will probably feel more nervous than usual.

♥   Have fun with it!!!

Now, on to the real photos!

I was soooo happy with all the photographs came out (these are just a sneak peak for you) and it made me so excited to see how the wedding will be captured! I hope you enjoyed this post for something a little different, and a little more personal. Do you have a special occasion coming up that you are doing your makeup for? I'd love to know!
