My Night Time Skincare Routine

As many of you already know, I'm very passionate about skincare. I wasn't born with naturally clear skin and unfortunately have suffered a lot with hormonal breakouts and congestion since about age 14. I have tried countless different products and one brand skincare routines, however it has only been within the last year I think I have finally discovered a skincare routine that I am really happy with.

I like trying new products here and there, there isn't anything wrong with changing out a cleanser or trying a new face mask, but I have tried to develop a solid night routine that I can really commit to and stick with. In today's post I'm talking you through some key products I have been using regularly over the past few months and can highly recommend to treat combination and/or acne-prone skin. These products have helped to keep my skin blemish-free and reduce a lot of my pigmentation and acne-scarring. If you're keen to hear what products I use at night, keep on reading!

I try to be very diligent with my night time skincare routine. I believe it is a crucial part of any skincare routine because you need the right mixture of products to really cleanse your skin after wearing a full face of makeup all day. I start off by using my Delicious Skin Clean Butter Cleanser* (mentioned in my June Favourites and How To Stay Hydrated This Winter posts). This cleanser is thick, creamy and with a small amount of water it emulsifies and basically melts off all traces of foundation, mascara and any other makeup you might be wearing. If I'm wearing any stubborn waterproof eyeliner or mascara or I just want to make sure there is no more makeup left on my face, I'll apply some Simple Micellar Water to a cotton pad and sweep it across my face to ensure all traces of dirt and makeup are removed.

After all my makeup is off, I go in with my Skinstitut Glycolic Scrub (mentioned in my latest skincare post here). If my skin is quite congested and broken out, I will use this daily. If my skin is doing pretty well, I will take it back to every second or third day as this is a physical and chemical exfoliant for the face, containing 14% glycolic acid, tea tree oil as well as jojoba exfoliating beads that rid the skin of dead cells. I always find my skin feels super soft and smooth after using this scrub.

After cleansing, if I remember (oops), I apply some of the Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner to a cotton pad and apply this to my face. This toner doesn't contain any alcohol so it is quite gentle on the skin and the glycolic acid mixed with grapefruit extract helps to keep skin clear.

The last three products, I mix up depending on my skincare needs. If my skin is feeling really dry, I like to use the Delicious Skin Supple Silk Serum* which is a very rich oil-based serum that is very hydrating to the skin, containing a blend of argan oil, rosehip oil, vitamin e, tea tree, peppermint, lavender and chamomile. This is a little greasy, so best applied at night so it can be fully absorbed into the skin.

Two to three times a week, to exfoliate, reduce redness and acne scarring, I apply my Sunday Riley Good Genes Serum (you can read more about it here). If I have any pesky blemishes that are red or irritated, I apply my Botani Acne Rescue Cream which really helps to reduce inflammation and acne bacteria without drying out the skin like most acne creams. It contains green french clay, tea tree oil, echinacea, lavender and vitamin e which work together to reduce redness and irritation and treat pimples overnight.

Reduced breakouts and congestion over time after following this night time routine regularly

Combination skin can be difficult to treat, because some areas may be dry, and others may be oily and blemish-prone, but I have found using a mixture of different products to treat specific areas of my face has worked the best for me!

Over the past 8 weeks I have seen a great improvement in my skin, and I believe it is because I have been following this skincare routine quite regularly and reduced the amount of harsh chemicals and alcohol based products on my face. As you can see I don't currently have any active breakouts and I am working to fully reduce my acne-scarring from previous breakouts.

I hope you found my night time skincare routine helpful and hopefully there is a product in today's post that you might benefit from as well! If you have combination or acne-prone skin, I'd love to hear about your go-to products to use at night!

  1. I love when you suddenly find a combination of products that works so well for you! I find that during the summer time a set of products will work really well for me but as soon as the seasons change over I have to switch up my routine otherwise I go through bad hormonal breakouts as well. I definitely want to try out good genes- going to go and read your review on that now! :)

  3. Thanks Lena! The pictures are a little embarrassing to share but I can definitely say sticking with these products consistently has helped me a great deal, and you can see how much my acne scarring has faded in just 4 weeks, and it has faded even further now. Would you be keen to see my Daytime routine?

  4. Sarah, you would love the scrub! I know you liked the Body Shop Seaweed Exfoliating one and this one is just a little finer but still gritty enough to get your skin feeling really smooth and clean, and the glycolic acid has helped me so much with reducing congestion! What moisturiser are you using? x

  5. I totally agree! I think the Delicious Skin Butter Cleanser would be a little too heavy in the summer, so I will be switching it up during the warmer months to something lighter. I'd love to know more about your skincare routine! Can you link me to any posts you have? xx PS: You'd love Good Genes! It's so good & worth the $$$

  7. It is very impressive. I definitely need to stick to a set routine but being a beauty blogger and being sent things all the time that I want to try is hard. Maybe I should commit to a routine for a month or two and see what happens. I would LOVE to see your daytime routine. I'm going to do my routine right now.

  10. I had that one and used it up! It's so great isn't it! If you buy the products in store, you can get any 3 Skinstitut products for $99 so I might do that as it is really great value. There is an Australian Skin Clinics right near my house.
