Sounding Out Samples: MAC Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation

I thought I'd bring you all a new series on the blog all about my experiences with trying out samples. As a beauty junkie, I have often bought a new product based on other Beauty Bloggers and YouTubers recommendations. Sometimes they are spot on and I am so happy with my purchase, other times the product may have not lived up to my expectations or just didn't suit my skin type or colouring. I think that is why it is such a good practice to try out samples for makeup and skincare products when you can. All good cosmetic counters will kindly give you a sample sachet or pot to try out different products before you have to commit to any purchases especially Mecca Maxima, Myer and David Jones. I thought I could share some of my experiences of trying out samples with you and if I think the product is worth purchasing or not! First up is the very hyped up Mac Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation. If you're wondering if this bad boy lives up to it's claims than keep reading!

There has been so much hype around this new foundation from MAC that claims to give medium to full weightless coverage and a semi satin finish. Supposedly the formula repels moisture and is waterproof as well as wearing for 24 hours. With those sorts of magical claims. I really wanted to try out a sample of this foundation before committing to the $54 AUD pricetag. I have tried out other foundations from MAC and have been disappointed with them (such as Studio Sculpt) so I was hoping this one would be different.

My MAC sample pot of the Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation

Just after initial application

I was kindly given two sample pots to try when I requested to be colour matched. I got NC20 and NC25 to see which would suit me better. For reference I am Desert Beige in Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation and Fiji in Nars Sheer Glow Foundation. I found that NC25 was a good match for me.

I actually really liked the way this foundation applied and made my skin look quite flawless upon initial application. Although it felt a little heavy on the skin, it had excellent coverage and got rid of any redness or blemishes that were causing me issues. Unfortunately I found that the foundation clung badly to any dry patches, despite the fact that I used a facial moisturiser and primer before applying it. I have combination skin that leans more oily than dry, but the foundation clung to some dry patches of skin on my nose.

Overall a nice finish but clings to any dry areas

As the day went on, I found the foundation wore quite poorly. It seemed to break down quite easily even though I wasn't working up a sweat and just doing normal weekend chores. It seemed to emphasise my pores and the foundation actually started to break down and wear off on my nose where the skin was more dry.

4 hours after initial application

I actually ended up taking off my makeup after this photo because it really annoyed me how much the foundation wore down around my nose in such a short period. I was quite disappointed by this sample given that I had heard a lot of positive reviews from trusted sources. Unfortunately this foundation just didn't work for me. I need something that will stay put throughout the day. I did lightly set this with my MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Powder which I always use to set my foundations and if anything, should have just prolonged the wear even more. I won't be purchasing the full size of this product and will just be sticking to my beloved MAC lipsticks and avoiding their foundations which just don't seem to work for me.

Did you like this foundation? Will you be getting a sample to try?
Let me know if there are any other products you've been wondering about and I can grab a sample to review for you all!
