Save or Splurge: Rimmel Brow This Way Eyebrow Sculpting Kit VS. Benefit Brow Zings

As a new feature here at Bows & Pleats, I wanted to start a Spend or Splurge series where I review similar products with a high end and low end option to see which one performs better. I'm all for saving a few bucks with my makeup if a product performs just as well as it's luxury counterpart, but I'm also happy to spend the money on something if it works really well and is high-quality. I hope you enjoy this series, and today I'm talking eyebrow kits! I'm comparing the Benefit Brow Zings with the Rimmel Brow This Way Eyebrow Sculpting Kit*. Which do you think will do better? Keep reading to find out!

Packaging & Price

Although on the outside, these two kits appear very different, their actual contents are pretty similar. Benefit Brow Zings (Medium) ($55 AUD) contains a pigmented wax for shaping and defining eyebrows and a natural-shaded powder for filling in and setting the brows. It comes in a sturdy compact with embossed writing and is extremely sturdy. Similarly, Rimmel Brow This Way Brow Eyebrow Sculpting Kit* (Dark Brown) ($12.95 AUD) contains a wax and powder duo with a huge price difference, but comes in a tiny clear case and is a little more flimsy but still snaps shut and can be tossed in your makeup bag easily.

What's Included

The Benefit kit also contains some tools to help you achieve the perfect eyebrow experience which includes tweezers, a hard angled brush and a blending brush. I personally found the blending brush pretty useless but the angled brush and tweezers definitely come in handy.

The Rimmel kit contains a double-sided brush and a combing spoolie brush for a precise and  flawless application. They are pretty tiny but great for travel or when you are in a pinch! I think the spoolie is a great addition since I always use one to brush through my brows before and after applying brow powder.

The major advantage of the Benefit kit is that it contains a massive mirror on the inside of the compact, however the Rimmel kit doesn't have a mirror which is the only major flaw I can see with what's included with this kit,

Both these kits apply somewhat warm-toned, but I didn't feel like they are overly red-toned, and they suited my medium-dark brunette hair quite well. Although I got the shade Medium in the Benefit kit and Dark Brown in the Rimmel kit, they are pretty much the exact same shade, so be careful when you try either of these kits to look at swatches for what will suit you best.

My eyebrows are naturally quite sparse as you can see from the first image. The Rimmel kit works well to define and shape my brows. I love the pigmented wax and find it really easy to work with. The powder is the more warm-toned shade and although I wish it was slightly cooler and a tad less powdery, for the pricetag it really does an amazing job at filling in any sparse hairs within my eyebrows and making them look natural.

As you can see, there is very little difference in result between the Rimmel kit and the Benefit Brow Zings. The shades are a great match, perhaps the Benefit kit being ever so slightly darker. I think the wax from this kit is slightly darker. The ease of use is pretty much the exact same, and the powder sets a little easier and feels less powdery than the Rimmel kit. Otherwise, you honestly can't tell the difference between these two products! In the below picture, on the right I am wearing the Rimmel Brow This Way and on the left is Benefit Brow Zings. You can barely spot the difference!

The Verdict

For traveling, I would probably prefer the Benefit Brow Zings kit for it's additional mirror, but I would take out the blending brush and slot in the spoolie brush from the Rimmel kit since it's so handy. In general, and for everyday use, I'd highly recommend the Rimmel Brow This Way Eyebrow Sculpting Kit* since it performs extremely well next to the Benefit Brow Zings and is literally less than a quarter of the price!

Hope you enjoyed the first post in this save or splurge series, and I'd love to hear some other product pairs you'd like to see compared! Have a great day beauties!
