My 3 Holy Grail Foundations: How I Achieve a Flawless Base

One question that I always get asked by my friends and fellow beauty junkies is what foundation is my favourite? For any fellow bloggers or beauty enthusiasts, you'd know this is a very hard question to answer! Foundation is such a personal thing. A foundation that works for one person, might look terrible on someone else. How a foundation performs really depends on the person's skin type, preferred coveraged and preferred finish. Even things such as the brushes/tools you use or the primer you wear underneath can vastly change the way the foundation works from person to person. Keep this in mind as you read through my recommendations. For me, I personally really like a medium-full coverage foundation that is demi-matte and somewhat hydrating while also not turning me into an oil slick. I have normal-dry skin on my forehead and cheeks, with an oily t-zone. I tend to be normal/dry in the winter and oilier in the summer. This post is about my top 3 recommended foundations, based on my personal preferences!

First of all, for my readers who prefer an easy, no-fuss base that also provides lots of hydration, skincare benefits and SPF, the IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream ($58 AUD) is the perfect solution for you. This is the highest coverage CC/BB cream that I have ever used, yet it feels like a moisturiser when applied and has a citrus scent which is very refreshing and not overbearing. The tube also contains a pump applicator which is super handy. I generally only need 1-1.5 pumps of this for my everyday coverage. This formula is infused with hyaluronic acid so it actually does feel very nourishing and hydrating on the skin.

I set this lightly with powder and have not had any issues with it's staying power for an 8 hour day. This foundation doesn't settle into pores or fine lines, and I actually think it looks better once it has had a chance to sink into the skin and really brightens up the complexion. For me, this is the perfect daytime base for everyday wear for work, a day at the beach or while on vacation. It applies well with a flat top kabuki brush or beauty blender. I mentioned this in my May Favourites 2015 so it has been a true favourite of mine for over a year - you can see what it looks like on in that post. It was also featured in other blog posts here, here and here so check those out for more detailed information. This is available in 5 shades on the Sephora AU website. I use the shade medium.

Next up, we have a foundation that can be worn during the day or also very suitable for evening looks and flash photography. The Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation ($65 AUD) is absoloutely amazing at providing medium-full coverage that is completely buildable and looks so natural on the skin. This formula is very thin and runny, meaning when it hits the skin it blends out like a dream and is almost undetectable and looks extremely natural. This foundation covers over blemishes and uneven skin very easily and can be built up to a full coverage. The bottle has a pump applicator and I use about 2 pumps to cover my entire face.

I have worn this as an everyday base to work when I want to look really nice, and also to special occasions such as my engagement party and it has never failed me. I have a full review and demo of this foundation here, so you can see exactly what it looks like on the skin. I am currently using shade 3.0 as I am a little pale during the winter. I can also get away with using 3.5, and 4.5 when I am faked tanned. One benefit of this foundation is that it is available in 24 shades which is great if you generally have issues finding your perfect match. I have repurchased this foundation twice now so it is a #1 winner in my eyes.

Finally, I thought I would leave the best for last. My #1 foundation at the moment, and for the past year or so has been the Too Faced Born This Way Foundation ($58 AUD). I always turn to this foundation when my skin isn't looking it's best and I need a boost of confidence in a bottle. It makes me look airbrushed, without look cakey or clinging to any dry patches of my skin. It's oil-free and doesn't contain SPF, making it the perfect companion for flash photography and special occasion makeup. This formula has a thicker consistency compared the UD Naked Skin Foundation, however it feels lightweight once applied to the skin. This bottle also has a pump applicator and I use 2-2.5 pumps depending on the level of full coverage I want to achieve. I like using a beauty blender to apply this one to achieve a flawless finish and even out the foundation across the face. I use the shade Light Beige which is quite yellow-toned and works really well to cover up the redness in my cheeks and any acne scarring I have around my chin. It is currently available in 18 shades.

I generally set this with powder and can get 12+ hours of wear without any issues. It is the best foundation I have used for longevity since the Estee Lauder Double Wear, however I find it looks a lot more natural than this foundation which is why I prefer it. I have a full review and demo wearing this foundation, and how it looks after 12 hours on my blog here. The price of this foundation has recently dropped with a more favorable US dollar conversion. When I first bought this it was $71 AUD, so it's a great time to try it or ask for a sample if you live close to a Mecca Maxima. I am currently halfway through my second bottle of this foundation and it is an absolute must for me!

Well, that is (hopefully) the big question answered for you! As new products come out, or my skin changes, it is possible that a new foundation may become my favourite and a product might get bumped off the list, but for now these are my current favourites. Please let me know if you'd like to see a more affordable or drugstore favourites for foundation options, as there a few bases that I really enjoy from the drugstore that I feel should get honourable mentions! I'd be happy to let you know what these are.

What is your favourite foundation at the moment? What do you like about it?
I hope you all have a wonderful day and I'll chat with you again in my next post!
