Save or Splurge: Mascaras and Setting Sprays

As much as I support and often give in to extravagant makeup splurges, I have always tried to buy, test out and review affordable and drugstore products on my blog. Being someone who is constantly buying and testing out new products, I think I have a fairly good idea of the kinds of products that are worth investing in and those products that are not worth the money or that have equally good drugstore counterparts. Of course, at the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference but one of my readers requested that I continue my Save or Splurge Series talking about different categories of products, and which ones I would splurge on and which ones I would choose drugstore! Today I thought I would discuss mascaras and setting sprays. If you're interested in other posts about saving money and beauty bargains click here. Stay tuned for lots of other categories in the series and let me know if there are any particular categories that you'd like to know my thoughts on!

Mascaras are definitely one of those products that are a necessity. Chances are if you are a beauty junkie, or a makeup newbie, mascara is one of those items you know how to use and probably pop on before you head out the door even if you aren't a big makeup wearer. Mascaras only last about 3 months before expiry and before they begin to collect bacteria from constant air going into the tube from pumping the wand in and out of the tube during each use.

Due to this very quick expiry date compared to a lot of other cosmetic products, mascaras are definitely a product where I feel like it makes more sense to SAVE your money and go for drugstore brands over high-end brands. If I had to choose my favourite high-end mascara it would be the Benefit Roller Lash Mascara which retails for $42 AUD or the Make Up Store Multi Lash Mascara (review here) which retails for $38 AUD. That is a lot of money to pay for a mascara that you will only get to use for a few months!

My drugstore picks would definitely be from Maybelline! They are the best drugstore brand for mascaras in my opinion, The Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara is a great dupe for the Benefit Roller Lash and very similar in formula and wand. I also personally love the  Maybelline Volum' Express Pumped Up! Colossal Mascara (pink tube) and Maybelline Colossal Go Extreme Mascara (black tube).

Setting Sprays

Setting sprays are a bit more of a tricky story as they are definitely a long-term investment and generally last for several months or longer depending on how often you use them. I personally use a setting spray every day to set my makeup but some people prefer to use them only for special occasions or when they really need their makeup to last. Earlier in the year I wrote a post about Setting Sprays for Every Budget which you can read here. It does give you lots of options to try.

I would say that a setting spray is a good item to SPLURGE on and go ahead and pick up something such as the Urban Decay Chill Setting Spray, which is a personal favourite of mine and retails for $49 AUD for 118ml. This one also comes in a De-Slick (oily) and All Nighter (normal) version. I think that any of the versions could work for you depending on what you like. I have combination skin and like the chill spray because it has a cooling effect which is nice in the summertime. These setting sprays also can be purchased in a travel size if you would like to try them out without blowing your budget which retails for $23 AUD for 30ml. It's much more cost effective to get the full size, but you can decide.

Furthermore, The Urban Decay Setting Sprays are made by a brand called Skindinavia, so why not go directly to the source? I can't fault the Skindinavia Setting Sprays which also come in multiple versions including Original, Bridal and Oil Control. My favourite version and my pick for you would be the Skindinavia Bridal Setting Spray for $49 AUD for 118ml, which I talk about here and here. I prefer this one for longevity and to make sure your makeup lasts all day and night!

Although a few years ago, drugstore setting sprays hadn't gathered much hype and were few and far between, in recent years they have certainly picked up some traction, and we now have more options in drugstore setting sprays. My personal favourites for everyday use would be the NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray $14.95 AUD for 60ml, which also comes in a dewy version if you like a more hydrated/fresh look. I have also recently tried the L'Oreal Infallible Fixing Mist* which is quite comparable to a higher-end setting spray and super affordable costing just $24.95 for 100ml. This one appears white but needs to be shaken before use and applies clear on the face. It works really well to prevent me from getting oily throughout the day.

Well, I hope you enjoyed my picks for both mascaras and setting sprays and hopefully found this post useful to assist you on your next beauty shopping experience! Please let me know which categories you might like me to discuss in my next post of the series.
