June + July Raves and Rejects

So it's been a hot minute since I've done a Raves and Rejects post! If you'd like to read my March Raves and Rejects, just click here. You can also read past Monthly Favourites Posts here. Over the past few months, I've been trying out heaps of new products and have found some new favourites along with others that just didn't work for me. If you'd like to hear some of my product reviews over the past two months, just keep reading!

In terms of products that I have been loving, there are quite a few re-discoveries within my collection since I went through a period of being on a spending ban.

The base that I have been gravitating towards the most over the past few months is to start off with the Mecca Cosmetica Lit From Within Illuminating Primer ($38 AUD). I received this primer as part of my birthday gift from Mecca as a Level 3 member. This is an awesome all-rounder primer that smooths the skin, while providing lots of hydration as well as brightening the skin. There is a notable floral scent to this one but it doesn’t irritate my skin at all. This would be a great everyday primer, especially during the winter when skin is dryer overall.

I have been pairing up this primer with the Milani Conceal and Perfect 2-in-1 Foundation and Concealer in 02 Natural ($19.10 AUD). This shade is actually a little dark on me but I can get away with it. It has heavy yellow undertones. I have recently ordered the shade Light Beige to try which is a more neutral undertone. The foundation comes in 15 shades and the formula is amazing! You might have issues finding the right shade for you if you have paler skin but you could try 01 Creamy Vanilla or the newly released 00 Light Natural, their palest shade. This is a high-medium to full coverage foundation but sits so nicely on the skin, concealing pores and blemishes without a problem. As the name suggests, I don’t feel like I need a concealer over this foundation to cover blemishes or redness which is amazing! This foundation is super long-lasting for a drugstore foundation and it isn’t overly drying despite the fact that it is full coverage. Let me know if you’d like a full review on this one!

I have finally gotten on board the Shape Tape train and tested out the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer ($37 AUD) in the shade Light Neutral. Well, I can say that I definitely love this concealer for under my eyes. A little goes a long way, but this full coverage concealer doesn’t look heavy or cakey like most others. I can see why this one is so hyped and I plan to get more shades, this one is about half a shade lighter than my NC20 skin tone, so I probably could have even gone a little lighter. I can understand why this product has over 1400 5-star reviews on the Tarte website! It’s bomb!

I was finishing off my base with the Rimmel Clear Complexion Powder ($12.95 AUD) in the shade translucent. I randomly picked up when I was in need of a touch-up powder while out and about. It is quite a good mattifying powder without looking too cakey or breaking out my skin. Unfortunately, Rimmel is not a cruelty-free brand so I have since switched back to my Australis Fresh and Flawless Powder which is an old favourite. It would be good to find some new drugstore alternatives as well.

For cheek products, I gravitated towards an old highlighter of mine the MAC Cosmetics Perfect Topping Highlighter (LE), I originally didn’t like this one because the baked formula prevented me from picking up much product on my brush but I discovered that once I used it more and worked my way through the baked pattern at the top of the product, it was a lot more pigmented. This is a cool-toned pinkish champagne highlighter and really pretty on the cheeks. Unfortunately, MAC is not a cruelty-free brand as they sell their products in China which requires animal-testing by law so I will be giving this one away to a friend and hunting for similar dupes! This product was limited-edition and has been discontinued.

For my cheeks, I have been OBSESSED with the Milani Baked Blush in Bella Bellini ($11.70 AUD). I thought that I loved Luminoso, but this one I love even more! It’s the most stunning rose gold shade, with an almost duo-chrome peachy pink shimmer. Honestly, it looks so amazing on the cheeks and adds some glow to make the face really light up. I have been using this every day and find it hard to pick up any other blushes lately.

For my lips I have been loving the Too Faced Melted Matte Liquid Lipstick in Cool Girl ($30 AUD). This is my first time trying the Melted Matte formula, and I love it! It dries down matte after a few minutes but feels really comfortable on the lips and doesn’t dry them out like most liquid lipsticks do for me. I particularly love the shade which is a cool nude, mauve-brown shade. I keep getting compliments when I wear this. To me, it’s a perfect everyday shade for the office or to accompany a smokey eye. I can’t wait to pick up more shade from this line.

Finally, I have been really loving the Eye of Horus Brow* Definer in Medium Brown Dynasty which I received in PR. It is very similar to the Benefit Precisely My Brow, and in my opinion it is a great dupe, especially if you are looking for a cruelty-free option. It is also much cheaper at $25 AUD, compared to $48 for the Precisely, My Brow pencil. A more cost-effective option since brow products tend to get used up faster from every day use if you’re like me and fill yours in whenever you do your makeup. I have begun using this every day in my brows and it helps you to get precise strokes. The other side of the pencil has a spoolie for blending through the product to achieve a natural and flawless look. This pencil also comes in shades Ash Blonde Husk and Dark Brown Nile. I might try the darker shade as well but the Medium Brown would suit dark blondes to brunettes.

In terms of rejects, there were also quite a few disappointments over the past few months. As you may have seen from my previous post What's Landed On My Desk, I received some Colour Max Baked Eyeshadow Palettes ($6 AUD) from Technic Cosmetics . While not horrible, they were disappointing, mainly for the lack of consistency in pigmentation for each shade. I really liked the colours presented in the warm palette, but many of the shades lacked good pigmentation compared to the darker palette which didn't appeal to me as much. Even the shades within the warm palette were inconsistent, with the lighter shade taking 4-5 swatches with my finger to show up on my arm. I'd like to try other eye shadow formulas from the brand to see if they might have better pigmentation. Obviously, at this low price point, it is not surprising these aren't the best quality.

Similarly, the L'Unico Facial Cosmeceutical Cleanser* ($70 AUD) which is described as having a gentle foaming formulation, left me disappointing as I found it had a very strong scent of Lavender and Sandalwood and when using it, it stung my eyes. I didn't find this to be gentle on my eyes and overall I didn't enjoy this cleanser which is a shame since it is such a luxurious product with gorgeous packaging. I have also been trying a sample of their Neuropeptide Firming Eye Therapy which I have been loving ($160 AUD) but I am unsure if this brand is cruelty-free.

I also tried out the White Glo Deep Stain Remover Toothpaste with Charcoal* ($6 AUD), but I found that this really did nothing to whiten my teeth. Although it is a grey colour, indicating the 'charcoal' formula, it really didn't whiten my teeth any more than my usual toothpaste. I have since tried other charcoal toothpaste formulas that seem to be working much better for me.

Finally, I purchased a mini of the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea 4-in-1 Setting Mist ($18 AUD) which has sadly left me disappointed. The nozzle doesn't allow for a fine mist application, but rather comes out way too heavy on the skin. It feels more like a hydrating facial mist and skin refresher (two of the claims), rather than a makeup setting spray or a primer (the other two claims), so perhaps they shouldn't have tried to promote this as a 4-in-1 product, but kept it just as a facial mist that adds hydration. I will be using this just as a mist to add some moisture to my skin. I bought this in the hopes that it would be a decent seeting spray but it definitely didn't help my makeup to last any longer than normal.
